Indices

Eight modules in a fixed order. Each one assumes only what came before it - start at module 1 unless you know exactly what you skipped.

  1. Module 1

    How index markets work

What an index is and what it is not - a calculation, not a tradeable thing. Who trades indices, cash versus derivative venues, and the daily rhythm around the open and close. The wrappers that make an index tradeable come in module 3; composition and rebalancing mechanics live in module 8.

    9 lessons, about 56 minutes

  2. Module 2

    Reading index markets

Index quotes and points, gaps at the cash open, futures trading while cash sleeps, and volume's different meaning when the instrument is a wrapper. Reading only - what drives the moves is module 5.

    9 lessons, about 57 minutes

  3. Module 3

    What trading indices costs

The wrapper decides the cost: cash CFDs and their overnight financing, futures and their spreads, and why the same index costs differently by vehicle. Full futures roll mechanics belong to the futures track, not here.

    9 lessons, about 60 minutes

  4. Module 4

    Managing index risk

Sizing in points and per-point value, overnight gap risk that stops cannot fully cover, and leverage on instruments that move fast around opens. Index positions correlate hard - treat US indices as one exposure until proven otherwise.

    9 lessons, about 62 minutes

  5. Module 5

    Index analysis foundations

What moves an index: earnings in aggregate, rates, and the handful of megacaps that dominate weightings. Technical structure on index charts. Single-stock analysis is the equities track's job; composition maths is module 8.

    9 lessons, about 62 minutes

  6. Module 6

    Building an index strategy

Rules, testing and expectancy applied to index behaviour - session tendencies, gap statistics, mean reversion versus trend by regime. Teaches evaluation of ideas, never a supplied system.

  7. Module 7

    Index process and review

Journalling wrapper, session and setup; reviewing gap trades separately from intraday ones; and recognising when index correlation makes a diversified-looking journal an illusion.

  8. Module 8

    Index specialist topics

Composition and rebalancing, cash-futures basis, and the wrappers compared properly - cash CFD, future, ETF - with what each costs and tracks. The depth modules 1 and 3 deliberately deferred.
